Although summer has not officially begun, Balkana Lake near Mrkonjić Grad was teeming with visitors over the weekend, offering scenes that looked like peak holiday season.
Hundreds of people flocked to this popular picnic destination to enjoy the sunshine, crystal-clear waters, and untouched nature — a perfect escape from daily routine.
From the early morning hours, the shores of Balkana were covered with towels, sun loungers, and the cheerful buzz of people of all ages. Children splashed and played in the shallow waters, young adults engaged in volleyball matches in the lake, while older visitors relaxed in the shade of pine trees or sat on benches admiring the serene lake landscape.
Besides swimming, many visitors took the opportunity to barbecue, enjoy a picnic, or hike through the dense forests surrounding the lake. The combination of birdsong, children’s laughter, and the scent of pine created an almost idyllic atmosphere.
The high attendance also led to crowded parking lots — with cars parked wherever space allowed, even spilling over into nearby meadows.
Once again, Balkana has proven to be one of the most beloved getaway spots — not just for residents of Mrkonjić Grad, but also for an increasing number of guests from neighboring towns who come to spend sunny days at this natural gem, Mondo reports.
