When the sun shines on the three rocks of Crvenjuša, it is precisely 12 noon! This tradition has been passed down through generations, serving as the only way to measure time, especially when plowing and digging with hoes in Dabarsko Polje. The clock on Crvenjuša, clearly visible from Dabarsko Polje, has never been late nor early, says a local resident of Hatelji.
On the Hateljske Grede of Straževica hill, near the village
of the same name, there exists a "stone clock" that has been showing
time for centuries. As soon as the sun warms Crvenjuša, it is exactly 12 noon!
In the mountainous region of Trusina, Straževica stands as
the dominant "guard" of the Herzegovinian karst. Rising over a
thousand meters above sea level, it overlooks the fertile Dabarsko Polje, where
Berkovići lies. The majestic appearance of this mountain has always attracted
human gaze from the valley. Numerous legends are associated with this
"mistress of the karst," but one of the most famous is how people in
this area have measured time for centuries using the "stone clock."
The "clock" is located on a rock called Crvenjuša. Regarding this
unique timekeeping method, Sava Đurica, a resident of Hatelji, says:
"The clock on Crvenjuša, clearly visible from Dabarsko Polje, has never been late nor early. I invite everyone to come and check it against their own watch, provided it is accurate!"
Many legends are associated with Straževica. According to
one, three nameless sisters built three churches on Straževica, which were
eventually buried by stone and soil. Some say you can still hear church bells
today. Another legend claims gold is buried on Straževica. The first watch in
the Berkovići area was brought by a local resident of Hatelji from America.
Many eagerly watched the large gold watch with its golden chain, waiting to see
if it would show the correct time like Crvenjuša. The watch displayed noon just
like the nearby rock, much to the delight of many, proving the legend true.
