Livanjski cheese has officially been granted the prestigious EU Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, joining a list of 3,639 other products whose quality and tradition are recognized and safeguarded by the EU's registry for agricultural and food products.
The EU's quality schemes and geographical indications enjoy global recognition, and this status is expected to bring significant market benefits for Livanjski cheese producers, particularly small-scale ones.
Luigi Soreca, Head of the EU Delegation and EU Special Representative in Bosnia and Herzegovina, stated:
"From today, Livanjski cheese joins products like Champagne, Parmesan, and Iberian ham as a protected product in the EU. Congratulations to Bosnia and Herzegovina! Livanjski cheese is the first food product from the Western Balkans to gain EU protection. We hope to see more such products. We remain at the disposal of local food and beverage producers for guidance on how to apply for EU geographical indications and quality schemes to enjoy their benefits."
The uniqueness of Livanjski cheese reflects the exceptional quality of milk produced in a region where Mediterranean and continental climates converge. This distinctive environment, with mountain pastures and karst fields rich in vegetation and aromatic herbs, lends the cheese its specific flavor.
Produced in Livno and neighboring municipalities, Livanjski cheese has gained global acclaim for its quality and tradition. Since the late 19th century, its production methods have been passed down through generations, ensuring consistent excellence.
The protection of Livanjski cheese showcases the tangible benefits of close partnership with the European Union for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The PGI status safeguards the authenticity of Livanjski cheese, ensuring that the name applies only to cheese produced in specific areas using traditional methods. This designation not only protects its unique flavor but also its connection to the region’s climate, pastures, and traditional cheese-making practices, making it a symbol of agricultural excellence in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
