EXPLORATION REVEALS IMPRESSIVE DISCOVERIES IN MRAČAJ CAVE COMPLEX

A recent expedition unveiled remarkable findings in the exploration of the estavelle Mračaj, a natural phenomenon nestled within the source complex of the Sana River in the municipality of Mrkonjić Grad, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The findings were presented at the Pecka Visitor Center following a multi-day expedition at the Mračaj cave site within the protected area of the Sana Springs Nature Monument.

The expedition, facilitated by globally licensed cave explorers Osama Gobara and Mauro Bordinjon, with logistical support from the Diving Club "BUK" and organized by the Republic Institute for the Protection of Cultural-Historical and Natural Heritage and the Environmental Center, witnessed the discovery of new passages and channels within the cave, hinting at their seemingly endless nature.
Even after traversing 1100 meters, the expedition team encountered no end to the siphons and underground lakes explored. The Institute eagerly anticipates the continuation of these explorations, with divers spending approximately six hours daily probing the depths of this speleological wonder.
Prior to this expedition, Mračaj Cave had been explored to a length of 400 meters and a depth of 26 meters by 2012, reaching a waterfall within the cave's entrance.
The hydrological phenomenon of Mračaj comprises a small lake beneath the rock from which water emerges in certain seasons and recedes in others. When active, Mračaj serves as a right tributary to the Sana River, located 800 meters downstream from its source at the Vrbljanski Bridge.
