WHAT TO DO WITH THE YULE LOG AFTER CHRISTMAS?

The Yule log, or "badnjak," is a central symbol of Christmas in Serbian tradition, often placed in front of or inside homes during the holiday. But what happens to it after the festive season? Should it be discarded immediately, or is there a better way to handle it?

The Yule log, made of oak, holds sacred significance for Slavic peoples. However, after Christmas, many people discard it in trash bins, on the streets, or in other unsuitable places, along with the Christmas wheat. Ethnologist Jana Jokić has emphasized that this practice is not in line with traditional customs.

“It’s important to preserve at least a small piece of the Yule log. Traditionally, the Yule log is burned on Christmas Eve, as this act fulfills the ritual associated with it. During the burning, people often say, ‘As many sparks, as much fortune, wealth, and happiness.’ Those who have done this have followed the old traditions. However, there are also beliefs suggesting that parts of the Yule log should be kept and placed on fruit-bearing trees to enhance their fertility. This way, the energy of the log transfers to the tree, ensuring fruitful harvests,” Jokić explained.

For those who cannot burn the Yule log outdoors, it can also be burned in a home stove or fireplace. The fire from the burning log is believed to bring fertility and blessings to the household. However, the fire should not be fanned or blown on—it should burn naturally.

A small amount of ash from the burned log should also be preserved in a clean place within the home. This ash is often believed to have healing properties. In some regions, people mix the ash with water to drink as a remedy for headaches.

For those without access to a fireplace or wood stove, the Yule log should be left in nature. Care should be taken not to leave it in nearby forests or meadows with non-natural additions such as ribbons, small sacks, or decorative grains. Only the wooden branches and leaves should be left in the environment.

By respecting these traditional practices, families can honor the spiritual and cultural significance of the Yule log, ensuring that its symbolism continues to bring blessings even after the holiday season.
