The people of Banja Luka cherish their Vrbas River, their green waterway, yet they often forget that it flows through several other towns before reaching Banja Luka and may not know where it actually originates.
The Vrbas River flows through diverse terrains, passing
through mountainous regions, forest areas, towns, and villages. Its course is
vital for the surrounding regions, providing a water source for human
activities and agriculture.
A captivating video has emerged on the YouTube channel "ZVRC," showing the birthplace of Banja Luka's most famous river.
The Vrbas River, a tributary of the Sava River, stretches
about 250 km in length and has a drainage basin of around 5900 km². It
originates on the Zec Mountain (a branch of Vranica). The Vrbas carves a
composite valley, flowing through the Skopaljska Valley, Vinačka Gorge, Jajačka
Valley, the canyon valley Tijesno, the Banja Luka Valley, and through its lower
course across the floodplain Lijevče Polje.
Its tributaries include Vrbanja, Pliva, Ugar, among others. Several significant hydroelectric plants are built on the river.
Towns along the banks of the Vrbas or in its vicinity
include Uskoplje, Bugojno, Donji Vakuf, Jajce, Mrkonjić Grad, and Banja Luka.
