TREBIŠNJICA BECOMES A SWAN OASIS

As they gracefully glide along the Trebišnjica River, swans often pause and pose for every camera, including ours.

Not long ago, swans arrived in the city under Mount Leotar from Belgrade’s Zoo. They quickly adapted and bonded with the Trebišnjica.

A year and a half ago, two pairs of swans came to Trebinje. Today, around ten swans can be seen on the Trebišnjica, with a goal to eventually reach a flock of around 30.

These swans have become a beautiful addition to both the river and the city. The local Tourist Organization confirms that swans now appear in almost every image of this southern gem.

“Almost daily, we receive photos in our inboxes showing how beautiful the swans are. People send us their photos, and we share them. It’s a delightful detail; swans as beautiful creatures have enriched the entire area and the section of the Trebišnjica in the city center,” said Nikola Kokić, spokesperson for TO Trebinje.

Most locals, as well as visitors, show care for these elegant birds, but they receive the most attention from the Center for Sustainable Development and Ecology. Aleksandar Vukanović says these birds are currently thriving in the south of Republika Srpska.

“It seems that this climate, along with the Trebišnjica River and its flora and fauna, suits them well. From day one, they have adapted beautifully,” said Aleksandar Vukanović from the Center for Sustainable Development and Ecology Trebinje.

Swans seek safety, so they spend their nights in the calmer parts of the river, while the city center is reserved for their daytime swimming. However, dogs and irresponsible individuals remain the biggest threats.

“It’s also been noted that some people have attempted to harm these birds. I would like to take this opportunity to urge all our citizens to treat such magnificent animals with the respect and dignity they deserve,” Vukanović added.

Swans are migratory birds, so if the south doesn’t continue to suit them, they can easily spread their wings and find a more comfortable home elsewhere.
