Along its course, it passes through the municipalities of Ribnik, Ključ, Sanski Most, Oštra Luka, Prijedor, and Novi Grad, enhancing the landscapes of these areas.

Legend has it that the ancient Latins named the river "Sana" because of its healing properties (Latin "sana" – healthy). The river is 146 km long, with 40 km of its length flowing through the city of Prijedor.

It is considered one of the most beautiful and cleanest rivers in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
