In Gornje Police, on the hill Crkvina near Trebinje, stands the medieval Branković Tower. It is believed that the original settlement of Trebinje was located at this site, encompassing the area from the church in the river valley to the hilltop.
During the Middle Ages, Trebinje was of great significance
to Dubrovnik merchants, primarily due to its strategic location. Although
historical records do not precisely indicate the center of this settlement, the
Branković Tower served a crucial role in the then-Trebinje as a strategic
point.
The distinguished Branković family lived and thrived during
the peak of the Serbian state, in the era of King Milutin, Stefan Dečanski, and
Emperor Dušan, from the early 14th to the beginning of the 16th century.
This tower is one of the older and less known historical monuments. It consists of two levels, with access to the elevated ground floor by ladder and to the upper floor through an opening in the vault.
There are
assumptions that this tower may not have belonged to the Branković family but
was Greek or Turkish in origin.
Considering historical data about Duke Mladen Mladenović,
the progenitor of the Branković family who ruled Trebinje in 1323, it can be
asserted that this tower indeed belonged to this family. Today, the tower
dominates the area known locally as Brankovina.
Unlike other medieval structures that have turned to ruins
over time, this monument is still entirely preserved with both of its levels
intact.
