An exhibition titled "Plant as a Spice: In the Realm of Colors, Scents, and Flavors" has opened at the Museum of Herzegovina in Trebinje, attracting the attention of both younger and older residents of the southernmost city in Republika Srpska.
The exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the fascinating world of spices, offering a special experience for those who wish to explore the mystical world of colors, scents, and flavors.
Uroš Buzurović, from the Natural History Museum in Belgrade, and the author of the exhibition, stated that over 30 plants are on display, some originating from the Balkan Peninsula, while others come from India, Indonesia, and other countries.
"Each plant in the exhibition is accompanied by a description tailored to the audience, explaining how it is used in culinary arts, along with some interesting facts, myths, and legends. In addition, we have an interactive section of the exhibition, which includes an educational table where spices are 'served,' along with a world map. When you press a button for a specific spice, the corresponding territory from where the spice originates lights up. We also have a section with jars of essential oils that visitors can smell and identify which plant they belong to," said Buzurović.
Slavko Spasić, director of the Natural History Museum in Belgrade, emphasized that the exhibition is a result of the staff's passion for their work.
"This exhibition was very demanding in terms of production; we even hired a team that works on film sets for the design. When it comes to natural history exhibitions, they have the difficult task of presenting all the processes we want to show in a simple way to bring the audience closer to the love of nature. We made sure to engage all the senses, as the experience is what's most important. In our gallery at Kalemegdan, this is one of the most visited exhibitions and has sparked positive reactions from the public. We are especially pleased to be here tonight at the Museum of Herzegovina, which recently received the ŽIVA award, and we are here to support them," Spasić said, as reported by eTrebinje.
Ivana Grujić, director of the Museum of Herzegovina in Trebinje, stated that tonight's exhibition marks the beginning of a successful collaboration with the Natural History Museum in Belgrade.
"For the first time, the Natural History Museum is opening an exhibition in Republika Srpska and Trebinje. As you can see, the people working there are not only experts but also highly innovative, adapting their knowledge and expertise to a wider audience. This is particularly important to us, as many of these plants originate from our region, such as lavender and sage. I believe that visitors will learn a lot, and it’s important to keep learning about spices as they can be both a remedy and a poison," Grujić emphasized.
The exhibition "Plant as a Spice: In the Realm of Colors, Scents, and Flavors" is organized as part of the "Days of Serbia in Republika Srpska" event, and the Trebinje public can view it until November 1st.
