Between the mountains Bjelašnica and Lebršnik in northern Herzegovina lies the Gatačko Polje. This karst field, located at an altitude of 920 to 960 meters, turns white in spring with the blossoms of wild daffodils.
The
locals of Gacko refer to this flower as "košta," and the field, which
is divided into the Upper, a plateau with numerous sinkholes, and the Lower,
known as Pusto Polje (Barren Field), where there are no quality pastures,
transforms into a "field of košuta."
Košuta, or daffodil, is a flower associated with positive and joyful feelings. Its graceful appearance and vibrant color make it a symbol of happiness.
A
bouquet of these flowers signifies that you wish joy and happiness to the
recipient, and gifting a single daffodil expresses a romantic desire.
In
honor of this flower, the annual "Days of Košuta" festival is held in
Gacko.
